This part of Louisiana asks a lot of a new lawn. The city was settled on the river's natural levees and later spread into drained marsh, so one block can sit on loamy levee soil while the next sits on stiff backswamp clay. If you have your heart set on St. Augustine, which has usually been planted as sod or plugs, we will tell you so rather than sell you a spray job that does not fit.

• On construction sites we place silt fence and inlet protection before grading and remove them once grass has taken hold
• You get written watering instructions for the first weeks
