Seeding Inland on the Northshore
Hydroseeding in Abita Springs is a different job from the lakefront towns. The town covers 4.5 square miles, and all of it is land, with no lake frontage or open water inside the limits. Most work here is about clearing, grading and getting grass started on new home lots.
Cleared lots need topsoil
When trees come out for a new home, the surface left behind is often roots, leaf litter and subsoil. That is a poor seedbed. We clear the debris, grade the lot to drain and spread topsoil before hydroseeding so the new lawn has real soil under it.
A town named for its springs
Abita Springs was originally a Choctaw village and takes its name from nearby medicinal springs. Water near the surface is part of this landscape. Low corners of a lot can stay damp, and we shape the grade so water moves off rather than sitting under new grass.
On the Trace
The Tammany Trace, a 31-mile paved trail on the old railroad line, links Abita Springs with Covington, Mandeville, Lacombe and Slidell. Small towns along the Trace have seen steady new building, and every new lot needs sediment control during construction and a lawn at the end.

Abita Springs Questions
My lot was just cleared of trees. Can you seed it right away?
After cleanup. Roots, stumps and debris have to be dealt with first, then we grade and add topsoil.
Why does one corner of my yard stay wet?
Often it is the low point of the lot. Regrading to send water to a ditch or swale usually fixes it.
Will my Abita Springs house lot need silt fence?
If the permit requires it, or if runoff can reach a ditch or neighbor, yes.
Can you leave some trees and seed around them?
Yes. We seed the open ground and keep heavy equipment off the root zones of trees you want to keep.
