Seeding Along Westwego's Waterways
Hydroseeding in Westwego means working in a small city where water is never far away. About 0.5 of its 3.6 square miles is water, roughly 10 percent. Industries here grew around the city's wetlands and bayous, from fishing and shrimping to seafood canning. For lawn and site work, that closeness to water puts sediment control at the top of the list.
Lots cut along a canal
Planter Camille Zeringue built a canal on the Seven Oaks sugar plantation. Later owner Pablo Sala divided the land along that canal into lots and sold them for $40 each, and many were bought by families displaced by a hurricane. The town that grew there, Salaville, became Westwego. Those canal-side lots shaped the old street pattern still in place.
Shell middens and old ground
Native Americans lived here for thousands of years and built large shell middens that can still be seen nearby. The French started a plantation and port here in 1719. Old ground like this can have shell, brick or debris in the topsoil. We rake out debris before seeding so the new lawn has an even bed.
A city since 1951
Westwego was incorporated in 1951. Many homes date from the decades after, and their lawns now need renovation. In low spots that hold rain, a bit of yard grading and fresh topsoil before overseeding makes the difference.

Mulch first, then rain
Since runoff reaches water quickly here, we try to cover bare soil the same day it is graded. Hydromulch goes on in one pass with seed and fertilizer, so the ground is protected before the next storm rolls in.
Westwego Waters and History
- Water share. The city covers 3.6 square miles, of which 0.5 square miles, about 10.6 percent, is water.
- Canal lots. Pablo Sala divided the former Seven Oaks plantation along its canal into lots that sold for $40 each.
- Shell middens. Indigenous people built huge shell middens in the area that can still be seen today.
- Wetland industries. Fisheries, shrimping and seafood canning grew up around the city's wetlands and bayous.

Westwego Questions
My yard has shells and brick in the soil. Is that a problem?
Small amounts are fine, but large pieces get in the way. We rake out debris and add topsoil where the bed is too rough.
Do I need silt fence next to a bayou?
If there is bare soil that can wash toward the water, yes. It keeps mud out of the bayou while grass establishes.
Can you redo a lawn after a house is torn down?
Yes. We clear debris, grade the lot, bring in topsoil and hydroseed it.
What does hydromulch do on a flat lot?
It holds moisture around the seed and keeps rain from splashing soil away. Even flat ground benefits.
