Lawns Behind the Levee
Hydroseeding a Gretna yard starts with one number: zero. Wikipedia lists the city's elevation at 0 feet, behind the levee along the Mississippi River. When a yard is that flat and that low, a lawn depends on a small amount of fall toward the street. We check that fall with a level before any seed goes down.
The first subdivision in the parish
John McDonogh bought a plantation here and in 1815 founded McDonoghville, splitting the land into city lots and 30-arpent farm strips. It is described as the first subdivision in Jefferson Parish. Gretna itself was settled in 1836 and incorporated in 1913. Old blocks mean small yards, mature trees and lawns that have been patched many times. Lawn repair and overseeding are the most common needs.
A house lost to the river
The plantation house Monplaisir and its outbuildings were destroyed by a Mississippi River flood in the late 19th century. The river shaped this ground, and the levee now holds it back. On lots near the levee, we keep fill and seed work inside the property and away from the levee itself.
Compact city, a lot of water
The city covers 3.9 square miles, and about 9 percent of that is water. With little room and lots of hard surface, runoff from a bare work site gets to a storm drain fast. For remodels and new construction we set silt fence and inlet protection before the dirt work starts.

Choosing between sod and seed
On a small Gretna lot, sod sometimes makes sense for a quick finish. Hydroseed costs less per square foot and gives a lawn that roots into your own soil. We price both at the site visit so you can compare.

Gretna Questions
My yard is dead flat. Will hydroseed even work?
It will, if water can leave. We add a little topsoil to create a gentle slope toward the street or a drain before seeding.
Is sod faster than hydroseed for a small Gretna yard?
Sod gives an instant look. Hydroseed takes several weeks to fill in but costs less and roots into your soil. Many small-lot owners pick seed for the price.
Do you need a permit for silt fence?
Silt fence is often a condition of a building permit rather than a permit on its own. We install it to match what your plans call for.
Can you seed under big oaks?
Grass struggles in deep shade. We seed the sunny parts and suggest mulch beds under heavy canopy.
