Restoring Yards in LaPlace
Hydroseeding in LaPlace often follows storm damage. About 5,000 houses in LaPlace were damaged by flooding during Hurricane Isaac in 2012, and the community was badly damaged again by Hurricane Ida on August 29, 2021. After a rebuild, raising or major repair, the yard is usually torn up and needs regrading and a new lawn.
A river that turns
LaPlace grew from Karlstein, one of the German Coast settlements populated by German-speaking immigrants starting in 1721. The area became known as Bonnet Carre, French for square bonnet, after the right-angle turn of the Mississippi nearby. The river and its levee have shaped this land for three centuries.
The crevasse years
Between 1850 and 1883, the east bank levee flooded several times. In 1850 a flood opened the Bonnet Carre Crevasse, a breach more than a mile wide, and it was not closed until 1883. Today the Bonnet Carre Spillway, built between 1929 and 1931 in neighboring St. Charles Parish about 12 miles west of New Orleans, sends high river water into Lake Pontchartrain instead.
What rebuilding leaves behind
Heavy equipment and fill trucks leave ruts and compacted soil. We break up the surface, add topsoil and grade the yard away from the house, then hydroseed so the ground is covered before the next rain. On ditches and swales, we add erosion control blankets.

LaPlace Questions
My house was raised after Ida. Can you fix the yard around it?
Yes. We regrade so water moves away from the new foundation and hydroseed everything that was disturbed.
The contractors left ruts everywhere. Do I need new topsoil?
Often. We loosen compacted ground and fill ruts with topsoil so the new lawn has an even bed.
Can you stop my ditch from washing out?
Yes, by seeding it and covering it with a rolled blanket, or with a sprayed fiber matrix where the bank is steeper.
How fast will the yard be covered?
The hydromulch covers the soil the day we spray. Grass sprouts in about one to two weeks in warm weather.
