From Farm Tracts to Front Yards

Harahan hydroseeding jobs sit on ground with a farming past. The city occupies land that was once part of the Soniat Plantation, an area known for good conditions for farming and raising cattle. In the late 1800s part of it was an experimental farm run by Southern University. On former farm ground, the native soil under an old lawn can be a workable starting point for seeding, though we test it before relying on it.

Subdivided by the railroad

In 1914 the Harahan Land Company, made up of Illinois Central officials, bought the Southern University tract and subdivided it. Early residents were railroad workers, river workers and truck farmers. Many lots from that period and the post-war boom now have lawns that are decades old, thin and weedy. Lawn renovation, with core aeration and overseeding, is often a better fit than tearing everything out.

Close to the river levee

Before the Huey P. Long Bridge opened in 1930, railcars crossed the river by ferry between Harahan and Avondale, climbing an incline over the river levee to reach it. Lots near the levee sit on the higher ground the river built. Even so, flat yards need a slight fall toward the street, and we check that before spraying any seed.

Growth in waves

World War II industry tripled the population, and by 1960 it passed 9,000. Apartment construction on Hickory and in Elmwood followed in the 1970s and 80s. Newer commercial and apartment sites often have bare edges and drainage swales that benefit from hydromulch and, during construction, silt fence.

A former golf course

Colonial Golf and Country Club, which hosted the 1954 New Orleans Women's Open, closed in early 2012. Large tracts of former turf like that are a reminder that this ground grows grass well when it is drained and cared for.

Harahan Questions

My lawn is old and patchy. Do I need a full new lawn?

Not always. If the grade is fine, aeration and overseeding can thicken it. If weeds have taken over, a full renovation with hydroseed is usually cleaner.

Is the soil in Harahan good for grass?

Much of it was farm and pasture ground, so native soil is often workable. We still test the surface and add topsoil where fill was used.

Can you seed around a new addition?

Yes. We fine grade the disturbed area, tie it into the existing lawn and hydroseed so the patch blends in as it grows.

Do you work near the river levee?

We work on private lots up to the property line. Anything on the levee itself is controlled by the levee authority.
