Grass for a Rebuilt Town

A lot of hydroseeding in Chalmette is tied to rebuilding. In August 2005, a 25-foot storm surge from Hurricane Katrina overflowed through the Mississippi River-Gulf Outlet Canal and flooded most of the town, with water as high as 14 to 15 feet in places. The population fell from 32,069 in 2000 to 16,751 in 2010, then rose to 21,562 by 2020. As lots are rebuilt, each one needs a lawn.

Vacant lots and new builds

When a lot has sat empty, it often has weeds, ruts and uneven fill. Before a new lawn installation, we clear and grade the surface, bring in topsoil where needed and spray seed and hydromulch together.

Riverside versus back of town

The least damaged part of Chalmette in 2005 was the river side, near Paris Road and St. Bernard Highway. Higher ground near the river drains better than lots farther back. We check drainage on every lot, but back-of-town yards usually need more attention to slope.

Historic ground next door

The Chalmette Battlefield, site of the 1815 Battle of New Orleans, is preserved as part of Jean Lafitte National Historical Park and Preserve. Low-lying parts of the battlefield flooded too, and its visitor center was destroyed and rebuilt. Large public grounds like that show how much open turf this area holds.

Ground cover for drainage

Streets and lots drain to ditches and pump stations. A bare ditch bank loses soil with every storm. Hydromulch with a tackifier, or an erosion control blanket where flow is steady, keeps those banks in place.

Chalmette Questions

Can you seed a lot that has been vacant for years?

Yes. We clear the weeds and debris, grade it, add topsoil if needed and hydroseed.

My new house was raised. How do you handle the ground around it?

We regrade so water flows away from the foundation and seed everything that was disturbed.

Can you keep a ditch from washing out?

Yes, with seed plus a blanket or a tackified hydromulch, depending on how much water it carries.

What part of the year suits seeding a Chalmette yard?

Late spring through summer, when warm-season grass germinates fast.
