Northshore Seeding in Slidell

Hydroseeding in Slidell takes place a step up from the south shore, but not by much. The city sits at about 13 feet of elevation, roughly 3 miles north of Lake Pontchartrain, and Wikipedia notes it is vulnerable to hurricanes because of that low elevation. Work here ranges from older town blocks to newer subdivisions.

Surge history

When Katrina made final landfall in 2005, parts of the city saw storm surge over 10 feet, and unincorporated areas to the south and east saw 13 to 16 feet. Many homes have since been raised or rebuilt. Each rebuild leaves ground to be graded and seeded, and on low lots, grading to move water off quickly is the first priority.

Brick, timber and creosote

Slidell started in the 1880s as a railroad town. A lumber mill, a shipyard, a creosote plant and the Fritz Salmen Brickyard followed. The creosote plant on Bayou Lane polluted the bayou and became an EPA Superfund site after it closed in 1986; the cleanup finished in the 1990s and Heritage Park was built on the land. It is a local reminder of why keeping soil and runoff out of bayous matters.

Crossroads growth

Interstates 10, 12 and 59 made Slidell a major crossroads. Commercial pads near those corridors and new subdivisions are steady work for silt fence installation during construction and hydroseeding once final grade is set.

Slightly cooler winters

Slidell's winters run a little cooler than the south shore. That shortens the fall seeding window, so we aim for late spring and summer for new lawns.

Slidell Questions

Is Slidell high enough that drainage is not an issue?

No. Thirteen feet is modest, and flat lots still hold water. We grade every yard to drain before seeding.

Can you seed around a raised house?

Yes. We fill and grade around the piers or foundation and hydroseed the disturbed area.

Do commercial builds near I-10 need silt fence?

Most permitted sites do. We put up the fence, guard the inlets and keep both in working order until the ground is stable.

Is fall seeding OK in Slidell?

It is riskier here than on the south shore, since winter runs a bit cooler. Spring and summer are safer.

Can you seed a pond bank on my property?

Yes, with a blanket or bonded fiber matrix to hold the seed on the slope.
