Mid-Century Yards on River Ground

Hydroseeding in River Ridge usually means bringing back lawns on lots that were built between the early 1950s and 1965. Before that, the area was farmland known as Little Farms, and before that it was French sugar plantations laid out in long lots, narrow at the river and running deep inland. The street grid still follows those lines, and so does the way water moves across many yards.

Long lots, long drainage runs

Long-lot plantations had short river frontage and extended far back from the Mississippi. Streets like Sauve Road follow those old property lines. Deep, narrow lots tend to drain toward the back or along one side. When we regrade for a new lawn, we keep that path open so water does not pond behind the house.

A crevasse in local memory

In 1849 the river levee at the Sauve Providence plantation failed in what is known as Sauve's Crevasse, flooding land to the east including parts of New Orleans. The break happened where an old meander of the Mississippi once branched to form the Metairie and Gentilly Ridges.

Built in one generation

G.I. Bill funding drove large-scale suburban development in the early 1950s, and by 1965 nearly all of the land between Harahan and Kenner along the river was developed. Many yards are now 60 or more years old, with compacted soil and tired turf. Overseeding after core aeration, or a full lawn renovation with hydroseed, are the common fixes.

Along Jefferson Highway

River Ridge runs along a 3-mile stretch of Jefferson Highway, with the Mississippi on its southwest side. Commercial sites along that corridor often need silt fence and inlet protection while they are being rebuilt, and hydromulch on bare strips once grading is finished.

River Ridge History in the Ground

  • Long-lot plantations. French long-lot sugar plantations here had narrow river frontage and extended deep inland.
  • Sauve's Crevasse. In 1849 the river levee at the Sauve Providence plantation failed and flooded land to the east.
  • Rapid build-out. Suburban building began in the early 1950s, and by 1965 almost all land between Harahan and Kenner was developed.
  • Name change. The area known as Little Farms was officially renamed River Ridge in 1974.

River Ridge Questions

Water sits at the back of my long lot. Can grading fix it?

Usually. We reshape the yard so it falls toward a side or front outlet, then seed the regraded area so it holds.

Is it worth aerating before overseeding?

On compacted older yards, yes. Seed needs soil contact, and aeration opens the surface so it can root.

Can you match the grass I already have?

If it is a seeded type like bermudagrass or centipedegrass, we can. If your lawn is St. Augustine, patching with sod may be a better match.

How long before a renovated lawn fills in?

In warm months, most of the coverage comes in over several weeks, with full density by the end of the season.

Do you clean up after the work?

Yes. Hydromulch overspray on drives and walks is rinsed off before we leave.
