Seeding Near the Harvey Canal

Hydroseeding in Harvey covers both residential lawns and a lot of commercial and industrial ground. The community grew up around the Harvey Canal, which started as a ditch dug from the Mississippi River south to the back of Bayou Barataria. Land near working water like that needs bare soil covered quickly so it does not wash into the channel.

A ditch that became a waterway

Jean-Baptiste d'Estrehan, royal treasurer of French Louisiana, had enslaved workers dig the original ditch. German settlers later widened it with wooden shovels and were paid in land downriver in what is now Gretna. Joseph Hale Harvey and the Destrehan family then began building locks connecting it to the Mississippi. The canal still defines the land use here.

Between the canal and the river

Harvey lies east of the Intracoastal Canal on the Mississippi, bordered by Gretna, Marrero, Woodmere and, across the river, New Orleans. Water is close on several sides. For commercial pads and yard grading near drainage, we set silt fence and inlet protection before any dirt moves, and we stabilize slopes with hydromulch or blankets when the work is done.

Mixed neighborhoods

Harvey was founded as a company town. Work here can range from overseeding a front lawn to spraying bonded fiber matrix on a drainage bank behind a business.

Harvey Questions

Can you stabilize a ditch bank behind my business?

Yes. Depending on the slope and how often water runs there, the seed goes under hydromulch, a bonded fiber matrix or a rolled blanket.

Do you install silt fence for small commercial jobs?

Yes, from a single lot to a larger pad, plus inlet protection on nearby catch basins.

What is bonded fiber matrix?

A heavier hydromulch with a binder that sets into a blanket-like layer. It holds seed on slopes better than standard mulch.

Can I get a lawn and drainage work done together?

Yes. Our grading crews also handle trenching for drainage, so the yard is shaped and seeded in one project.
