Seeding Historic Lots in Arabi
Hydroseeding in Arabi often means working on old, small lots with a lot of history in the soil. Arabi sits on the east bank of the Mississippi between New Orleans' Lower 9th Ward and Chalmette. It started in the 1800s as Stockyard Landing, named for the stockyards and slaughterhouses that lined the river there.
What turns up in the yard
Wikipedia notes remnants of blood traps in the rear yards of some Old Arabi houses, and residents digging pools have found dishes from New Orleans hotels and restaurants. Yards like that can be uneven and full of buried debris. We rake and screen the surface, then add clean topsoil so new grass has a uniform bed.
Higher ground near St. Claude
During Hurricane Betsy in 1965, flooding spread over most of Arabi except higher ground, and survivors headed toward St. Claude Avenue, closer to the river. In 2005 Katrina's surge covered all of Arabi, more than 20 feet deep in some areas. The pattern still holds: the river side drains best, and the back of the community sits lower.
A small community
Arabi had 4,533 people in 2020. Most projects here are single lots: a rebuilt house, an addition, a backyard regrade. That suits hydroseeding well, since one truck can prep and seed a small yard quickly.

Small yards, careful edges
On tight lots we mask fences, walls and drives so the green mulch stays on the soil. Anything that lands on hardscape is rinsed off before we leave.

Arabi Questions
My yard is full of old debris. Can you still seed it?
Yes. We remove what we can at the surface and cap it with clean topsoil before hydroseeding.
Do you work on very small lots?
Yes. Small yards are quick for us, and hydroseed keeps the cost down compared to sod.
Which parts of Arabi drain best?
Usually the higher ground toward the river. Lots farther back may need more grading before seeding.
Will the green mulch stain my fence?
We protect fences and walls while spraying and rinse off any overspray.
