Seeding a River Town

Hydroseeding in Madisonville is close to the water almost everywhere. The town lies on the banks of the Tchefuncte River near where it enters Lake Pontchartrain, and covers only about 2.5 square miles. Much of it flooded in the Lake Pontchartrain surge from Katrina in 2005 and again during Isaac in 2012, and yards there have gone through rebuilding and regrading.

Named for shells

The town was founded in 1800 as Coquille, or Cokie, because of the abundance of shells in the area. Shell can still turn up in local soil. A little is harmless; a lot makes for a rough seedbed. We rake out what we can and add topsoil so new grass roots evenly.

A river that was mined

Fritz Jahncke's firm was the first to use a steam-driven hydraulic suction dredge to pull sand and shell from the Tchefuncte and other rivers for concrete used to build New Orleans. The town was also a port shipping bricks and other goods down the river. Today the river is known for boating, and Marina del Ray, about 2 miles downriver from the old shipyard, is the largest marina in the region.

Close to water, careful with sediment

With the Tchefuncte this close, runoff from bare dirt has a short trip. For new construction and rebuilds, we install silt fence along the river side before grading and keep it up until the grass is established.

Quick cover after grading

Hydromulch protects the surface the same day it is sprayed. On a waterfront lot that is the main reason to choose it over dry seeding with straw.

Madisonville Questions

There is shell all through my yard. Can grass grow there?

Yes, with some prep. We remove the coarse material near the surface and cap it with topsoil.

How do you keep mud out of the river during construction?

Silt fence on the low side of the lot, and fast ground cover with hydromulch once grading is done.

Can you seed a slope down to the water?

Yes. On slopes the seed is covered with a rolled blanket or a sprayed fiber matrix.

My yard was regraded after flood repairs and is bare. What is the fastest fix?

Hydroseeding. The mulch covers the soil the same day, and grass follows in a week or two in warm weather.
