Seeding on the East Bank of St. Charles
Hydroseeding in Destrehan covers neighborhoods on the east bank of the Mississippi in St. Charles Parish. The CDP has 7.9 square miles of area, and about 1.0 square mile of that, more than 12 percent, is water. Between the river, drainage canals and low back lots, keeping soil in place is part of almost every job.
Along the Great River Road
Destrehan Plantation, the former home of Jean Noel Destrehan, is on the National Register of Historic Places, and its restored main house is one of the stops on the Great River Road.
Spillway country
The Bonnet Carre Spillway, also in St. Charles Parish about 12 miles west of New Orleans, diverts Mississippi floodwater into Lake Pontchartrain. Wikipedia notes the spillway has long been a source of sand and clay for construction around the area, and that clay from it is used to raise levees in St. Charles Parish. Fill and topsoil brought onto local lots can vary a lot, so we check what is there before seeding.
Newer subdivisions
Newer home lots often have a thin layer of topsoil over compacted fill. We loosen the surface and add topsoil where needed so a hydroseed lawn can root properly.

Water close by
With so much water inside the community, sediment from bare ground does not have far to go. Covering soil quickly with hydromulch, and keeping silt fence up until the grass is established, protects both the lawn and the canals.

Destrehan Questions
The builder left me a yard of compacted fill. What now?
We loosen the surface, add topsoil and fine grade it before hydroseeding. Grass will not root well in packed fill alone.
Do you stabilize drainage swales?
Yes. Swales that carry steady flow get erosion control blankets; lighter swales can get a heavy hydromulch with tackifier.
Is hydroseed a good choice for a new build in Destrehan?
For most new lawns, yes. It costs less than sod and roots into your own soil.
Do you remove silt fence after the lawn grows in?
Yes, once the ground is covered we pull the fence and smooth the trench line.
